Dr. Andrew Wakefield first drew widespread attention for his 1998 Lancet MMR autism study; he had discovered a new disease. But pursuit of links between childhood vaccines, intestinal inflammation, and neurological injury in children, cost him his job in the Department of Medicine at London's Royal Free Hospital, his country, career, Fellowships, and his medical license. He has since been proven right.
Wakefield re-invented himself as an award-winning filmmaker. His first documentary, Who Killed Alex Spourdalakis?, made American legal history by changing the outcome of a case of alleged murder. He produced, directed and co-wrote VAXXED, a CDC whistleblower story confirming the MMR vaccine-autism link, and one of the top US documentary features of 2016. He is the director of his first major narrative feature, Protocol 7, co-written with Terry Rossio.
He wrote the national bestseller Callous Disregard and has just released his latest bestseller - The Bequest.
Twenty-eight years ago, I headed-up a collaboration of physicians and scientists that reported on a novel inflammatory bowel disease in children with autistic regression and gastrointestinal distress. In the majority, onset of symptoms followed MMR vaccination. The autism epidemic seemed to start with children born at the end of the 1980’s when MMR was introduced. Data claiming that this upward trend started in those born a few years earlier, thus exonerating MMR, omitted data on the UK government’s “Catch Up” campaign that included older children, born a few years earlier. Having thoroughly reviewed all published studies on measles-containing vaccines, including monovalent measles vaccine (MVM), I came to the conclusion that such studies were inadequate to qualify the safety of MMR vaccine. Moreover, independent studies identified “interference” between the measles and mumps components that altered the anti-viral immune response. The implications of this “interference” for safety were completely unknown. Out of an abundance of caution and having conducted due diligence, I presented my concerns to Dr. David Salisbury, Principal Medical Officer at the UK’s Department of Health. On the absence of studies comparing the safety of MMR versus MVM, clearly irritated by the impertinence of my question, he said that the government had “no reason to assume that the safety profiles of these two vaccines should be any different.” His “assumption” on behalf of the millions of British children born beyond this time, throws into sharp relief, the attitude of the vaccine apparatchik towards vaccine safety concerns. The same assumption appears to have been made by public health officials in the US. With the publication of the paper, after fully appraising my colleagues and the medical school authorities, I recommended that parents opt for using single measles, mumps and rubella vaccines (available in the UK and US at that time), until the necessary studies had been conducted. Six months later the UK withdrew the importation license for the MVM and in the US it appears that Merck stopped providing the MVM option; it was MMR or nothing.
I met with Dr. Elizabeth Miller, head of the UK’s equivalent of the CDC, and asked her, why? If the government’s principal concern was preventing measles, why withdraw one option for parents to do this. “Allowing parents the choice of single measles vaccine would destroy our MMR program,” was her answer. The principal concern was for protection of the MMR vaccine program and not the children.
What happened subsequently to me and to my career is but a small matter - a footnote in the history of this episode. The COVID saga has made abundantly clear how those with vested financial and policy interests deal with dissenters, whatever their rank.
So here we are, twenty-eight years later. Nick Hulscher and colleagues have published their peer-reviewed analysis of all studies that purport to examine the possible role of vaccines in autism. The report concludes, “Combination and early timed routine childhood vaccination constitutes the most significant modifiable risk factor for autism spectrum disorder.” In their insipid and ill-informed attack on Secretary Kennedy, mainstream media appears to have missed this landmark report. Now, President Trump and Secretary Kennedy have taken the bold, bold step of addressing the bloated and inadequately tested US childhood vaccine schedule. One day, the people of this great country will look back and thank them.
